The Skin Project

“Skin” is a project by writer Shelley Jackson where participants have a word tattooed on them (in a classic book typeface) from a story, that is known only the participants. I heard about it a few years ago (I might have even applied) but forgot about until tonight. I don’t know why it popped in my brain.

I just emailed her expressing my interest in participating. My chances are slim because she has over 10,000 new applicants and only 692 spots available. It’s worth a shot.

Like I wrote in my email to her, I don’t have a profound reasoning for interest in participating. I just love words, typography, and projects that involve multiple participants. Plus, the idea of being part of a story written on flesh that’s walking around this planet in very exciting to me.

I don’t have any tattoos (yet), just a lot of scars. I’ve been thinking about them lately. I have a a few ideas involving type and math that have been bouncing around my brain for years. Soon they’ll be out of my skull and on my skin.

Expressions

I’m sort of a collector of expressions:

• “Hotter than Satan’s perineum.”
• “I’m not going to piss on your back and tell you it’s raining.”
• “Jumping Jesus on a pogo-stick!”
• “As busy as a one-legged tap dancer.”
• “Sticking feathers up your butt does not make you a chicken.”

• and oh so many more that I only remember when they fit

My collection has become worn from years of abuse, so I’d love to hear some new ones.

New Words

A few months ago, while Eva the Deadbeat and I were IMing, we came up with some words—it’s more likely that she came up with them and I just wrote them down. I recently found my scribbles in the pile of ideas and to-do lists, so I thought I’d share them with you:

sogay [soh-gey] adj: really lame, dumb, stupid, etc.; inspired by the comments left on submissions to user generated content websites (i.e. You Tube): This video is sogay!

pornevetable [pawrn-ev-i-tuh-buhl] adj: whatever one is doing on the internet (i.e. email, web searches, image searches), porn is sure to appear; all roads lead to porn — pornevitability n — pornevitableness n — pornevitably adv

deathlebrity [deth-leb-ri-tee] n, pl -ties: someone who is more famous or well-known after their death. EXAMPLES: Franz Kafka, Vincent van Gogh, Henry Darger, S.R. Wild

Use them now. Use them often. Add them to your spell checker.

We also came up with some definitions, but never came up with words to go with them:

• Surfing the internet, IMing, or emailing when one should be working
• What you tell people you’re doing when you’re really just looking at porn
