We’re terrible animals. I think that the Earth’s immune system is trying to get rid of us, as well it should. —Kurt Vonnegut on The Daily Show
This morning, while catching up on my email (newsletters, fan mail, rejection letters, etc.) I read that my webhost, DreamHost, is now a carbon-neutral company. “That’s straight from the fridge,” I thought to myself.
[If you’d like some green hosting too, I have a promotion code (SRWILD23) to receive $23 off any hosting plan at DreamHost. (FULL DISCLOSURE: Yes, I do receive a kickback if you use this code.) When I first signed up with them I thought their hosting was horrible, but I haven’t had any problems since that first week.]
It seems appropriate that I found this out today, seeing as how Earth Day was two weekends ago and today is Green Up Day (there’s synchronized sweeping in Montpelier).
I do my best to lessen my impact on this blue speck of dust. I recycle—I think it’s required in this town—and I encourage those around me to do so too. When I started working at my previous job, we didn’t have any recycling bins other than for paper in the office, so I set up a few. Despite my efforts, my coworkers still tossed bottles in the garbage can that was next to the recycle bin. I also use those curly energy efficient florescent light bulbs.
Another thing I do, mainly for selfish reasons, is pick up trash off the ground to use in my various projects. I don’t have much money these days to spend on art supplies. Plus, I like using decaying man-made objects because it reminds me that nature will always prevail… ha, not really, but it sounds profound.
There’s a Tom Waits song for everything:
