This has always been one of my favorite Vincent van Gogh lyric references (not that I know of any others). I started writing a long rant about artists and self-mutilation, but the only other example I could think of is William S. Burroughs cutting off his pinky.

very nice! surely there are other self-mutilating artists – it just seems like art and self-mutilation go hand and hand but maybe that is more metaphorical-mutilation than literal generally…hmmm…
