A Room with a View
While I’m procrastinating… one morning last week, I found a surprise when I went into my studio: It was bright in here from natural sunlight! Usually a sliver of sunlight would come in for about ten minutes in the morning and the rest of the time I worked in the dark or under a sunlamp. I opened the shade and was shocked to find out that I could see something other than a wall. I can now see the intersection near my building. In turns out that the commotion I heard the previous day was one of the buildings next door being torn down.
According to the guy who maintains my building it’s been condemned for years but the city wouldn’t allow it to be torn down because it was a historic building. Over the winter, the roof caved in from all of the snow and was blocking the narrow area that was supposed to be used as a fire escape—I don’t think even I could have squeezed through it. The city inspector, from the same city that wouldn’t let it be torn down, said it needed to come down. Basically, the city was fighting the city. Well, the city won and it finally came down.
Now, I can sit in my window and watch cars, people, and dogs go by. The only downside is the constant beeping of the crosswalk signal.
